I knew Savannah had to cover black

August 18th, 2010 • By: jilladmin Black, Full Peruvian, Males

and she just proved me right by delivering a true black, 19 pound male on Saturday. We’re naming him Morimiril – “shining black jewel.” His sire is Allegheny Peruvian King Coal, the top suri herdsire at MAPACA this year. Mori is full Peruvian and has rare Rufino genetics, as his mother is a Rufino daughter.

Mori has good luster under all the dust (another early roller!) and has been growing steadily. Savannah is a good mother, but her kids do have to learn to drink quickly – she’s not the most patient when they’re nursing. Mori is also going to have to learn to deal with four big brother cria who are all ready to pounce on the new guy. I suspect he’s going to grow up quickly…

Finally – it’s a girl!

The first female cria born to us, Isilmë, just delivered a beautiful baby girl of her own on Friday morning. She was at 358 days gestation, with no signs of labor when we left the house at 9:00 AM – but baby Pica (“small spot”) was up, dry and trying to nurse when we got back home at 9:45! It was clearly an uncomplicated delivery, and mom and baby are both doing great. Isilmë is proving to be an excellent mother, as expected.

Pica is soft, fine and lustrous like her two half brothers – she is the third cria sired by our WRSR Peruvian Payday, and we continue to be delighted with what he is producing. Pica is beige with a single dark brown spot on her neck, and weighed 21 pounds at birth. She was running around with the “big” boys right from the get go and has been incredibly active and independent.

Payday’s first two cria are here!

And they are stunning!  Gina delivered BESAME Payday’s Minnónar (“firstborn”) on June 17, a 20 pound beige boy who was as tall at birth as the three week olds!  Then, not 20 minutes after the vet left on the 18th (she was here checking over the new mom and baby), Empressa went into labor and delivered a 23 pound white boy, BESAME Silima (“shiny white thing”).  Both cria are doing well, but the poor moms keep getting confused, now that we have three light-colored cria racing around.  It’s chaos out in the fields at dusk!

Here are some pictures of Minno, who has some of the most lustrous fiber we’ve seen yet on a cria.  He is simply beautiful, but a little knock-kneed from having been so cramped inside Gina. Payday has definitely kicked up the quality of Gina’s cria a notch, though.

Silly is also incredibly lustrous, and has a buttery soft handle to his dense fleece. He is a compact, very solid cria with presence. He may be Empressa’s nicest cria to date, and her previous offspring weren’t exactly slouches in the show ring.

Payday has one more cria due this month, and his fourth is due in August. We are already eagerly planning his breedings for this year, and looking forward to having fiber statistics back to share with prospective dam owners. Payday’s Accoyo Baccarat bloodlines are not common anywhere, and certainly not in New England.

It’s a boy – Paragon’s Vírin

June 4th, 2010 • By: jilladmin Full Peruvian, Males, White

Marbella delivered a gorgeous 18.2 pound white male on Memorial Day Monday – we have named him Paragon’s Vírin (“magical substance of which the moon is made”).  Marbella is a Ramilo daughter, while her dam produced Cappucci, a gorgeous fawn herdsire for Humming Hill.  Ramilo was one of the most influential suri herdsires ever and needs no introduction for serious suri breeders.  Vírin’s sire is Accoyo Paragon, a Jackpot son.  Wth bloodlines like this, we hope he will add some magic to our breeding program!

Vírin has been strong and active since his birth, which was easy and uncomplicated, but Marbella’s milk has been slow to come in.  She was unbelievably overconditioned when she came to us, and while we’ve slimmed her down some, her body score is still higher than it should be and this may be interfering with milk production.  Vírin has been quick to figure out his two supplemental bottles a day and eagerly accepts them – while Mom does her best to stomp the interfering two leggers into the ground.  Did I mention she’s a very protective mother?  Vírin is gaining well with minimal supplementation, and I certainly hope to be able to stop offering the bottles soon – Marbella has excellent aim when she spits.

Welcome BESAME Kemen!

May 28th, 2010 • By: jilladmin Brown, Full Peruvian, Males

BESAME Kemen (“earth” in Quenya, Tolkien’s Elvish language) made his appearance at 7:40 this morning, right before a full day of shearing was planned.  We had to help a little bit with an elbow lock, but otherwise the birth was quick and uncomplicated.  Mama Jade is an angel with her babies – stands still like a statue and moves her back leg out of the way.  She’s also making enough milk for two!  A very determined Kemen found the milk bar by 9:30.

Kemen is a medium brown with black points, by the incredible sire Sierra Bonita’s Sirius Black.  He weighed in at 18.9 pounds and has been up and running around checking out his world since early this morning.
